it's all the rage...
a few months back i was watching
rage and they had the winner of the competition to program the saturday night. the winner of course was a total undeserving assclown who while i was watching went from showing the tv audience something his mother had written for him, to using that as a delicious segue into a busta rhymes clip. karma will of course give him bowel cancer for that indiscretion. well here's hoping anyways. anyways, with boredom and time on my hands playing a major influence i thought i'd go through what i'd play on rage if i won said competition. so here below is my rage saturday night play list with notes on each (yeah i know they don't do them for each on rage but why the fuck not i say) AND a link to the corresponding clip on youtube or an equivalent site. it even times out at roughly 3 and a half hours which is the average length of these programming efforts. fuck me, i'm so very anal. anyways, emjoi gently...
about - think niles drink (4:00) (link)i thought this would be a nice upbeat opener. i dig the track and love the just slightly staggered effect of the clip. i love the cd skipping sound being used for good and not evil. from recollection i came across this track on a cock rock disco soundtrack...
bauhaus - telegram sam (2:11) (link)now i chose this bauhaus song because i think it's a wicked cover and like most good bauhaus tracks it's succinct and leaves you wanting more. i'm also sick of just seeing the clip for mask being shown so here's this one...
faith no more - a small victory (5:10) (link)one of my favourite faith no more tracks from my fave album of theirs. angel dust kicked much ass and got some serious rotation back in the day. it was a close call between this and everything's ruined but the use of the word cankers got this one over the line. heh...
carcass - incarnated solvent abuse (4:40) (link)carcass fucking rock. they had the best shirts and the hardest to remember lyrics. necrotism is still one of my favourite albums to this day so i had to play this one. the clip isn't the best but who cares, it's carcass...
mother love bone - stardog champion (5:12) (link)ahh mother love bone. to think what could have been. this band was destined for big things until andy's heroin overdose. heroin. think about it, without heroin andy wood wouldn't have od'd, there would have been no temple of the dog, therefore there would be no pearl jam. all of the poppies in afghanistan should be erased just for having led to that event alone...
merzbow - minus zero (3:25) (link)now for some electronics. ooh yes. there is nothing like merzbow for pure sonic terrorism. people may wonder why i dig this stuff but for me there is nothing more cold, harsh and brutal than power electronics or japanoise. i've also seen this guy live and yes, it did indeed rocketh...
wolfsheim - künstliche welten (3:28) (link)i love this song. i have from the moment i first heard it. i guess you could call wolfsheim a guilty pleasure of mine. i'm not big on the synthpop genre but this song works for me a lot. the clip is ok too...
meliah rage - beginning of the end (3:00) (link)this is a track from one of the albums that formulated my musical tastes when i was all young and impressionable. it's from their album entitled kill to survive which i bought it when i was in year 5 and have listened to it more times than any other album i own. originally i think i was entranced by the gory cover but what a thrashing gem it turned out to be...
the smiths - heaven knows im miserable now (3:10) (link)the smiths are fucking awesome so i had to play one video of them at least. with this one i chose it because it has everything. morrissey's quiff is at it's highest peak, the shirt mostly unbuttoned and even the gladiolas get a guernsey. i defy you to find me a poncier clip than this one. truly awesome. the song is ok too. heh...
STROM.ec - v.a.l.i.s (6:34) (link)strom are one of my favourite electronics acts and as this was the only clip they have ever done it was a given it would be in here. if you don't think heavy electronics can be innovative then go pick up a copy of neural architect. it's in my top 10 all time fave albums for good reason. this clip is from their upcoming album which has been due forever now and i quite like the song. almost heads towards dark ambient in places...
tumbleweed - hang around (2:29) (link)this song was bouncing around my noggin like a motherfucker while strolling down the hallways back in high school. i loved tumbleweed then and i still do now. i'm from wollongong, it's just the way it is. they're also the band i've seen the most times live, which i think stands at about 13,147 times. i'm from wollongong, it's just the way it is. heh...
yeah yeah yeahs - y-control (3:59) (link)i could say that this song is great and go on blah blah blah about it, but to describe it best i'd say this is a song to fuck to. her voice is just the sex in my humble opinion and yeah the song is great. heh. the clip itself is a little odd though. it has interesting imagery and doesn't fit at all with the sex vibe i attribute to it...
joy division - atmosphere (4:06) (link)i had to play at least one thing from one of the best bands to have ever existed. joy division were nothing short of brilliant and this song is just another example. it also happens to be my favourite video clip of all time. the clip itself is quite sad really. a sort of tribute to ian. complete with druids. it all works to perfection...
icehouse - great southern land (4:58) (link)without a doubt in my mind, and with no tongue at all in cheek, this song should be our national anthem. it's the only piece of music which i think makes me feel anything remotely patriotic. i mean, who the fuck feels anything for advance australia fair?? when was the last time any of us used the word gurt in a sentence? there's also the thing that it's a cool track. icehouse/flowers rocked the 80's...
nirvana - sliver (2:13) (link)nirvana was my favourite band of the 90's and still up there now. i own almost every thing they have ever put to a cd. to say i was obsessed with them back in the days of grunge is obvious. obvious as the fact that nickelback have set human evolution back a generation or 3. it's no longer called generation y, it's now generation oh dear god why???? hahahahaha. anyways, i digress. this song rocks...
einstürzende neubauten - z.n.s (6:40) (link)from year 3 onwards my parents allowed me to stay up all night and watch rage. back then it was mighty hard to stay awake all night but like a little trooper i did. one night in year 3 or 4 rage played the entire halber mensch film that neubauten did with ishii sogo. to say that i was completely blown away by it was an understatement. it made me realise that there was so much more out there other than the shit music my parents bought for me without me asking for it. to be honest it was the point of no return and played the most massive part in formulating my musical tastes. out of the clips from that film i've chosen z.n.s. it does indeed rocketh and how can any song suck when it has people mispronouncing the song title and chanting 'syphilis' instead?...
christian death - romeo's distress (live) (3:00) (link)i like christian death quite a lot. well the rozz fronted christian death anyways. his voice is nothing short of amazing and it's a shame there is a goth metal replacement guitarist sullying their good name. anyways, there are not really any clips for the band so this one comes from the rather awesome reunion concert they did in '93. it's on dvd. buy it...
inxs - don't change (4:29) (link)ok, this song reminds me of when i was really really young and back in the time when wham was big and tears for fears had star power. i guess it's safe to say that it's a bit of a nostalgic track but the song itself kicks ass in my opinion. if only michael had of kept making tracks like this instead of masturbating with a belt around his neck he could have prevented the debacle that was rockstar: inxs...
fear factory - cyberwaste (3:32) (link)ok this song is here for being just a balls-out aural assault. it even reminds me a bit of the way they played on the very excellent soul of a new machine which was a favourite back in the day. it seems they're doing better without dino...
deine lakaien - return (3:40) (link)another soft-ish electronic deutsch band that i dig a lot. kasmodiah was a fantastic album and still gets the occasion spin. plus, alexander has the best hair in music. it also helps that his voice is pretty damn good too...
ratcat - that ain't bad (3:45) (link)ahh ratcat. another of the guilty pleasure bands. they made many a catchy tune and had probably the worst shirts ever with that rat/cat thing down the arms. they also were absolutely huge when i was in year 7/8 when i didn't even like them. the ratcat love didn't come until the late 90's and i was lucky enough to see them live at the big day out when that frenzal rhomb clownshoe had a heart attack and they replaced them. was a good gig too...
nick cave and the bad seeds - the mercy seat (5:06) (link)it was a toss up between this clip and the one for stagger lee but mercy seat has a better clip and the song is more poignant and powerful in my opinion. i was a pretty late starter with mr cave and his exploits with me only getting into him in the mid 90's or so. still, i got there in the end. also, this is the only song in the world where the chorus can be repeated so so many times and actually increase the line's potency on each delivery. mad skillz...
s.o.d. - speak english or die (live at budokan) (3:09) (link)another of the albums that were a huge deal in formulating my tastes back in primary school was s.o.d.'s speak english or die album. i bought it (or had it bought for me) in year 6 i think and listened to it over and over and over and over again. the album is awesome from start to finish. the best thrashy stuff in the business. now this track is from their reunion gig in the early 90's. note the raining blood effort mid-song. pure awesome...
crash test dummies - mmm mmm mmm mmm (4:01) (link)one of the best drinking songs out there. many a time i played this one on the jukebox at the pub. goes great alonside the cure, nick cave, and copious amounts of alcohol...
raison d'etre - disintegrates from within (9:41) (link)as per usual, brilliantly perfected dark ambient from mr andersson. this and the majority of his side-projects rock my socks and i don't have much more to say other than i love the way this music has the power to mentally take me wherever it wants to go. it's almost a primal thing i guess. it's hard to explain...
necro - i need drugs (4:30) (link)this video is just plain disturbing. my old dealer played me the mp3 of this track a while back and i stumbled upon the clip not long ago and oh yeah it's all class. using real junkies is the cheapest way to make a clip yet very effective...
celtic frost - a dying god coming into human flesh (5:41) (link)monotheist was a fantastic comeback album and is also my favourite from celtic. this song is nice and dirgy and makes your stomach recoil when it's played at massively loud volume. very nice indeed...
echo & the bunnymen - the cutter (3:56) (link)great song from a great band. i'm still shitty that i missed out on seeing them last time they came out...
swans - a screw (3:30) (link)the swans kick ass. so much variety over the years. i liked the majority of it although they lost me a bit whenever they went overly folky. still, there's so much good shit to choose from. they are also one of only 2 acts that i enjoy the cover of joy division's love will tear us apart...
guns n' roses - estranged (9:39) (link)gnr kicked much ass and i had trouble picking the clip but went with estranged because i haven't seen it 20 million times. the clip is ok, the song is great but for some reason it makes me wish they did a video for coma...
jesus and mary chain - never understand (2:57) (link)i love the distortion and feedback this band produce. psychocandy was an awesome album and still kicks ass in my opinion. i have misplaced my copy somewhere along with a few mogwai albums and it's eating at me to search the wardrobe behind my computer desk which contains stuff i didn't think i'd need hence me putting a chest of drawers and my comp desk in front of it. i stand corrected...
d.a.d. - girl nation (3:43) (link)this song is funny but good at the same time. i remember them being popular around the time countdown revolution was running and richard wilkins was still doing mtv. i also remember that 2 string guitar and the sparks flying from the bassits helmet. the singers short sleeve number is also something to behold...
megadeth - holy wars...the punishment due (6:32) (link)this song is thrash heaven. every time i listen to it i still get chills on how good it is. rust in peace was a freaking classic album with absolutely sublime guitar work and deserves to be in the top 5 albums of any metal fan. i saw them a year and a half ago and they were mucho goodness...
editors - munich (3:45) (link)i heard this song for the 1st time when i was in wollongong for xmas where i get a car with no cd player to drive around in. this of course forces me to listen to jjj whenever i'm driving. anyways, i loved that haunting guitar sound from the moment i heard it and when i got back to dads place i downloaded the album. on dialup. needless to say it was good as is the new one and if you can you must see these fuckers live. they know how to play...
skinny puppy - pro-test (4:29) (link)now i was going to go with testure which like anything from VIVIsectVI is just pure gold but instead i chose this clip. why you ask? goth breakdancers. yes, goth breakdancers. i don't really think i need to say any more than that. haha...
hard-ons - something about you (2:26) (link)there isn't an australian who watched late night rage during the late 80's and early 90's who wouldn't know who this band is. they were punchbowl's answer to the ramones and i have fond memories of rage playing this and the girl in the sweater after 3am when the heavier stuff usually came on. sweet...
skid row - 18 and life (3:49) (link)well this just was begging to be included. skid row were the epitomy of bad boy hair metal. they also kicked ass live and i got to see them back in 1990, woohah! unfortunately slave wasn't as great an album as the debut and it went downhill from there. now all we see is sebitchian guesting on trailer park boys and making an ass out of himself on reality tv! one thing i always wanted to know though, how the fuck did rachel get around without having half his body ripped off due to having chains connecting his nose to his navel to his ass to his ear and whatever else? i guess we will never know...
machine head - old (4:07) (link)the first time i heard the burn my eyes album i was on acid and from that moment on i was in love with it. the artwork for the album was pretty damn sweet too. it's a shame that they started sucking after burn but what can you do. it also must be said that flynn's previous band vio-lence were pretty sweet too...
vio-lence - world in a world (3:57) (link)ok, i think it's safe for me to say 'see above'...
mogwai - friend of the night (5:30) (link)another great mogwai track. i must say that i've gotten into quite a lot of post-rock stuff over the last year or so and there's no better example of why than mogwai. to say that i'm rather perturbed that i missed out on seeing them live last year due to financial constraints would be a fair statement. i first saw one of their earlier clips on rage and thought it too drony at the musical place i was in at the time. funny how bands come back to you isn't it?...
the cranberries - linger (4:40) (link)a simply beautiful song. one of those ones i can listen to on repeat for ridiculously long periods of time. the first 2 cranberries albums kick much ass. the no need to argue album was constantly in my walkman for a while back in the day. the only song i didn't like of that album was zombie (auto fast forward the moment the gorgeous twenty one started to fade out) but the rest was rather to my liking. bet you didn't expect to read that shit. haha...
violetine - any day (3:29) (link)a criminally underrated post-grunge era band if ever there was one. small speaker joyland is a great album and was a portent of what was to come. well until sony fucked them over and the band broke up. the singles from the album were mostly good but it's when violetine meandered that they were at their best. dr vonk being a good example. buuut as this is the only clip that i can find here 'tis...
the knife - heartbeats (3:55) (link)now it was either going to be this version or the josé gonzález version and i do love both versions as the emotion behind both is coming from completely different places. in the end considering most of the other angsty shit i have on this list, i went for the more light of the two. heh...
cult of luna - leave me here (4:27) (link)now this band are fucking awesome. ran into them on myspace of all places and liked what i heard. they call it post metal apparently and it kicks ass. the perfect mixture of the softer intricacies and nuances of post rock but with an aggressive counterbalance. fuck me, that was the wankiest sentence i've ever typed. i should write record reviews. haha...
big wreck - the oaf (3:57) (link)the album (in loving memory of...) from which this song is taken is one of the best blind purchases i have ever made. for those not in the know, a blind purchase means i was flush with cash and i bought the damn thing because of one song on the album that i happened to like at the time. anywho, even though i was highly impressed with my gem purchase from wollongong markets, of course what usually happens when i like a band nobody has heard of other than that song played on jjj (ironically that song is titled 'that song') occurred again and they were never heard from in australia after that. i bought their 2nd album and the singers post breakup solo cd from amazon though so nerr to you all. oh yeah, the album. wikipedia calls it neo-progressive hard rock or some shit but i think wiki is just making shit up again...
suicidal tendencies - trip at the brain (4:59) (link)ahh cyco miko, how you did make me wish i had some actual co-ordination and skill on a skateboard when i was younger but alas it wasn't to be. still, i had your music and that was good enough for moi. another of those crossover thrashy type bands but with the skate thing attached. there are many suicidal songs i could pick but this one is my fave. i love the speed the song picks up both vocally and instrumentally towards the end. wicked moment...
synapscape - new order (6:45) (link)now this one is from one of my favourite electronic acts synapscape. over the years they have added more elements rather than just sticking to the 4 on the floor rhythmic noise or going whole hog into other genres. ok it's 4am and i have no idea what i'm talking about other than to say this act rocks and this is the only clip they have to my knowledge so yeah...
morbid angel - blessed are the sick/leading the rats (4:53) (link)blessed are the sick was my favourite album from morbid angel and probably tieing with carcass's necrotism for favourite death metal album of all time. the production on this album was fucking fantastic. to me it feels warm in temperature and visceral without being sharp and abrasive. by slowing it down considerably from 'altars' it has more for me. it's a work of art not just 4 to the floor death metal. the clip does suck though i must admit...
alice in chains - would? (3:28) (link)dirt is one of my all time favourite albums. the whole thing leaves me with a wretched smack taste in my mouth. it's feels just like it's titled. plus you can't go past layne's voice, fantastiche! so yeah i wasn't going to finish this without at least one AIC track and here it be...
now to the final track of the evening and fuck me swinging it's the best song i could ever have come up with. no explanations needed!
enjoy...cycle sluts from hell - i wish you were a beer (2:22) (link)now to be honest, i could fill another 20 hours up with all the songs i'd want to play and have good reasons for each of them but this thing has gotten outta control somewhat and i waaaaay underestimated the time this would take. here i was thinking an hour or two. hahaha fuck i'm stupid and fuck this was pointless. i need to leave the house at some juncture i dare say...
in other news, i am leaving the house next saturday night for some kind of ball with a cyber theme. there best be cake... Current Mood: tired
